WHKS was retained by Tobey’s Construction (project contractor) to provide structural engineering services for a high-profile Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) project for the Illinois Department of Transportation for the Illinois 115 Over Gar Creek Accelerated Bridge Replacement in Kankakee, Illinois.
The new bridge superstructure was constructed next to the existing bridge and then rolled into place during a 72-hour roadway closure window. (See Video.) The new structure is an 82’-0” single span steel girder with composite concrete deck superstructure, 36’-0” clear deck width, supported by H piles with semi integral concrete abutment caps.
WHKS provided on-site construction observation during the road closure period to aid in resolving emerging structural issues. ABC practices were used throughout the project to help reduce traffic impacts, improve site safety, and decrease project delivery time while minimizing the overall budget.
WHKS worked closely with the Contractor, Design Consultant, and the Illinois DOT to implement new innovative ABC solutions to facilitate a successful project. At the time of construction, this was the Department’s second ABC project to date.
