During a flooding event, a low head dam was heavily damaged in East Park, located in the center of Mason City, Iowa. After evaluation and preliminary design, it was determined that the dam could not be repaired. WHKS designed a project to remove the remaining components of the existing dam and construct a series of rock riffles to main aesthetics and stream grade. The design included a re-design of the adjacent streambank to allow for greater public access.
The project involved environmental and archaeological reviews and extensive stakeholder and regulatory coordination. The project was further complicated by the fact that the original structure was on the National Historic Register.
