WHKS provided engineering design services to the Mason City, Iowa Park Board for a new pedestrian bridge connecting East Park with the Family Aquatic Center across the Winnebago River. The park is across the river from the Aquatic Center and the Margaret MacNider Campgrounds, both of which are heavily used in the summer months. The new bridge also serves as a link to the Winnebago River Trail.
The new structure improves the accessibility for those who wish to bike or walk to East Park, without having to cross Kentucky Avenue, a highly traveled route in Mason City.
Critical project issues included potential flooding concerns with the Winnebago River and designing the structure to be handicapped-accessible.
